Scott Karp is actually talking about something a tad different here, and on the Blog-city discussion group we’ve been talking about why we blog. Update: posts are repeated here at Alan Williamson's new Blogging News. Both of these got me to thinking:
Who is my audience?
I think of my audience as probably being over 30. They would have the emotional and intellectual maturity to read and ponder something not-quite-mainstream. Obviously technically astute, or they wouldn't have found me in the first place ;>)
They are creative, but not the kind of creativity that requires huge grants and groups of expensively-dressed people standing around congratulating each other on their elitism. This is the kind of creativity that’s more about writing a finely-crafted story to share, cooking a meal their guests could remember for a long time, or making something useful to make their work easier.
They are self-reliant, and independent. They are skeptical about involving government in social problems, because they recognize that government’s tendency to throw money and make laws won’t be too likely to make the problem go away, and could make matters worse.
They may or may not have strong spiritual beliefs, but either way are comfortable with how they feel about it, and can allow others their beliefs as well.
They are egalitarian. They believe in the kind of equality that recognizes and accepts differences, and does not single out any particular group as being more “special” or “deserving” than any other.
They could well be either Democrat or Republican, liberal or conservative politically, because the definitions for all those groups are becoming blurred and changing to something that’s not clearly recognizable anymore.
So that’s at least part of who I think my audience is.
Who is your audience?
