This one’s going to be a lot of fun to watch. That is, if you’re into cooking and/or food. Unlike other contest kinds of programs, the people on this one aren’t beautiful, charming, or trendy. But they do know their way around a kitchen!
They start off with 12 contestants, and they narrow them down week by week. Big prize is $100,000. that’s it, near as I could tell. I’ll hafta check the website.
Anyhoo, tonight’s challenges kicked off by seeing who could last 30 mins on the line at a San Francisco restaurant. (The Quick Fire challenge) All of them had my sympathies -- I don't think I could last 30 minutes on a line! Only three lasted more than a minute or two. Two of them were doomed before they started. Cynthia, the elder of the bunch at 52, had the wrong kind of shoes to work in a kitchen. Then Ken, an Irish transplant, stuck his finger in a sauce to taste it.
Then later had the damn gall to try and defend that. He pretty much made an ass of himself the rest of the evening.
The second challenge was for each contestant to prepare their signature dish. Everybody’s trying really hard to get their presentations right, but unfortunately, the food suffers. There’s one health nut in the bunch who presented what was basically a pile of veg. Big yawn there for everybody.
The winner was a simple fish dish with an equally simple sauce.
The loser was, as you’d expect, Ken bigmouth. You just can’t defend unsanitary practices.
Looks like there’s going to be plenty of drama ahead. Some people clearly aren’t well-rounded cooks, and that’s what I think will win in the end.
Update: The Queen's watching it too!
