Lately there are three words that affect me like fingernails on a chalkboard whenever I see them. They bother me because they’ve somehow evolved into meaning different things than they are supposed to mean, and for me it’s often a signal that a writer mis-using these otherwise honest words is either up to no good, or does not know what he or she is talking about..
ScreechWord #1: diversity
What it’s supposed to mean:
di·ver·si·ty [ d-vûrs-t, d- ]
n. pl. di·ver·si·ties
1. a. The fact or quality of being diverse; difference. b. A point or respect in which things differ.
2. Variety or multiformity: "Charles Darwin saw in the diversity of species the principles of evolution that operated to generate the species: variation, competition and selection" (Scientific American).
The Modern Translation: White people are bad, and white men are worse. Even worse are elderly white men, and the absolute worst of all are old white men who are also wealthy. These people should become the Untouchables of society; undeserving of jobs, public services, or charity.
ScreechWord #2: empower (or its forms, empowering, empowerment, etc.)
What it’s supposed to mean:

1. To invest with power, especially legal power or official authority. See Synonyms at authorize.
2. To equip or supply with an ability; enable: "Computers ... empower students to become intellectual explorers" (Edward B. Fiske).
The Modern Translation: These poor slobs are so stupid they can’t find their asses with both hands. They need help from US (insert name of ideology or organization here) to direct them in how to (insert subject here).
ScreechWord #3: lie (or its forms, lied lying, or liar)
What it’s supposed to mean:
lie2 n.
1. A false statement deliberately presented as being true; a falsehood.
2. Something meant to deceive or give a wrong impression.

The Modern Translation: Because I disagree with this person, and have the psychic ability to know he or she has all the same facts I do, I have concluded this person is deliberately distorting my concept of truth for evil purposes.
