Gathered outside the Young Women's Christian Association on Travis Street, men, women and children clasped hands in prayer as the deafening wail of sirens blared from emergency vehicles, signifying the silent cry of victims of domestic violence.
Sunday began the 10th annual "Week Without Violence," an effort by the YWCA to bring attention to domestic violence issues.
And with Louisiana ranking second in the nation in domestic violence deaths, with 67 already this year, Roxann Johnson, head of the YWCA of Northwest Louisiana, urged the 50 or so people attending a ceremony of remembrance not to accept or tolerate domestic violence in their own lives or the in the lives of others.
"Don't be silent," she said. "Don't think it is none of your business."
The ceremony included testimonies from survivors of domestic violence, who told their stories through tears.
The weeklong effort will include projects for students at area schools, a film festival, and a march for solidarity on Thursday at the Caddo Parish Courthouse.
Area law enforcement officials and firefighters attended the ceremony to show their solidarity with victims and to let people know that there is a way out.
Johnson also recognized members of the Shreveport Fire Department for participating in a national test program that trained city firefighters in domestic violence issues, making each fire station a safe haven for victims.
With domestic violence being the third most common call to area law enforcement officials, Shreveport police Sgt. Crawford Lee Jr. said it is important to raise the public's awareness of the issue.
