Washington, D.C. –– Concerned Women for America (CWA) calls a report just released from the U.S. Census Bureau a warning bell for families. “Examining American Household Composition: 1990 and 2000” reveals that single-adult households now outnumber traditional mom and dad families.
“Experts saw it coming, but the nation’s not ready to face the ramifications of single-adult households replacing the traditional mom and dad family in America,” said Dr. Janice Crouse, senior fellow of the Beverly LaHaye Institute, CWA’s think tank.
“No commitment binds them. No shared history bonds them. Our lack of connectedness is withering both our capacity for compassion and our passion for justice,” said Crouse.
In her report, Gaining Ground: A Profile of American Women in the 20th Century, Crouse tracked the progress of women over the past century and pointed out that the price of progress was sacrificing relationships, especially marriage and family. Her report, Cohabitation: Consequences for Mothers and Children, describes the impact on women and children when the marriage rate dropped by more than 40%. She reported: “In 1960 there were 90 married couples for every cohabiting couple, but by the year 2003 there were less than 12 married couples for every cohabiting couple.”See the reports as well as her Data Digests and articles at www.cwfa.org.
Crouse said, “The tipping point came in the year 2000, when single-adult households numbered more than 27 million –– up nearly 5 million from 1990, while traditional families with a mother and father and their children slipped to second place as their number decreased by more than 400 thousand over the decade.”
Crouse added, “It should be noted, that 8.4 million of the single-adult households are widowed persons living alone, 85 percent of whom are 65 or older. When you add to the number of traditional families, those married couples who are either childless or whose children are grown and those who are widowed, this total is more than double the number of households headed by single adults living alone who have never married.” (Note: comparisons exclude the non-traditional cohabiting couples with or without children.)
