A theatrical performance and training on children and domestic violence
Thursday & Friday, July 28 & 29, 2005
Red Lion Hotel Yakima Gateway, Yakima, WA
We are fortunate to be able to bring Praxis International to Washington to provide a two-day training on intervention in domestic violence cases where children are involved. This exciting training starts with a 45-minute interactive play based on stories from battered women's lives. It's a powerful experience that brings participants into the physical, emotional, and spiritual turmoil of a home where battering is occurring. It offers a deeper understanding of the complex dynamics created by an abuser, and the play will demonstrate how destructive the
abuse is to the relationship between a mother and her child(ren).
In this training, we will:
· learn how the violence and abuse perpetrated against a mother is also an assault on the relationship between her and her child;
· discussing how agency interventions (dv programs, CPS) to protect children and/or battered women can affect an abuser's use of intimidation, coercion, and violence;
· look at the intended and unintended impact of dv programs and other agencies' interventions;
· engage in dialogue and critical thinking on policy and programming issues related to intervening in cases of battering where there are children;
and
· think about how to create community interventions that halt the damage being done to the relationship between mother and child and work towards repairing it.
