Instapundit is discussing ways to make cutbacks of unnecessary programs to aid Katrina relief. I'd like to add one more big pork barrel. To add your own, see NZ Bear's effort here.
The most obvious (and believe me, one of the easiest) ways would be to let VAWA sunset, thus saving almost
a billion dollars a year until 2010 at the federal level. which could be channelled into Katrina relief.
Since Katrina has already provided a major portion of the so-called "services" current programs provide -- that of removing women from their homes -- any shelter programs in the area have been rendered moot. The further two elements of these programs, divorce assistance and revenge (in the form of jailing men without due process, and "'prevention" programs that only promote hate and suspicion of all men), will be mostly unavailable during the rebuilding process, and may likely be seen as what they are.
There will be scrutiny of all kinds of programs at all levels, and inefficient or counterproductive programs will go by the wayside.
Since actual help for bona fide victims of domestic violence does not exist anywhere in these programs, why not start with one of the most damaging and money-wasting programs we have in the US? The only people this would negatively affect are those who benefit from VAWA now -- the people and agencies who run these clearly inefficient and counterproductive programs.
UPDATE: Instapundit has asked we post the result of any effort on our part to contact our legislators about our particular pork issue. I have been contacting legislators about this since late last year, and have yet to receive any kind of response, or indication that my hard-copy letter, e-mail, or fax even arrived. Congressman Raul Grijalva's office did send me some background information once, but no word on whether he is for, against, or ignores the issue.
