Every nine seconds a woman is abused by her significant other, according to Lake County’s Safe Place, a group that helps women and children escape domestic violence. A group of Albion College students is making strides to try to help these women.
Alpha Chi Omega’s philanthropy is the fight against domestic abuse. The sorority is raising money for Safe Place of Battle Creek, which provides housing, education and counseling for abused women and children.
“Students and faculty were so generous with their donations because they recognize that domestic violence is a reality and it is up to us to do something about it,” said Kelly Kobus, Lansing sophomore and head of philanthropy for AXO.
Through selling purple ribbon magnets and setting up a table in the Kellogg Center to accept donations, the sorority has raised $1,190.60.
“We asked for spare change and got $20’s,” said Jessica Graffius, Grosse Pointe junior and vice president of recruitment for the Alpha Chi Omega house.
Student and faculty kindness also held strong during homecoming when AXO partnered up with Alpha Tau Omega to set up a domestic violence awareness table in the Kellogg Center.
“We had information available, asked for donations and sold car magnets for $5,” Kobus said. “The turnout was amazing. We were absolutely thrilled by the student and faculty generosity.”
Next semester AXO plans to continue their fight against domestic abuse by raising money through the Mr. Briton pageant.
“We will be purchasing things for the women and children who stay there [Safe Place],” Graffius said. “Make-up and perfume for the women, so that they can feel good about themselves. They leave their homes with nothing.”
On Dec. 2, AXO held a coffee night at their lodge. Visitors enjoyed holiday desserts and coffee donated by Beaner’s of Lansing while listening to live music. All profits were to be donated to Safe Place.
